Chartres Cathedral - (Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres).
Chartes Cathedral, devoted to the Mother Of God, - is a monument of Gothic architecture and Christian medieval culture.
The construction of the temple, which adorns the city Chartres (83km from Paris), was begun in 1194 on the place where the Cathedral of the same name was burnt (the best-preserved was only towers, facade, porch and crypt).
The residents of the city gathered necessary means for the reconstruction of the cathedral and participated in it.
The backbone of the edifice was built in 1220, with the portal and the Old Royal crypt, escaped destruction of the fire, organically incorporated into the new cathedral.
In 1260 it was consecrated by King Louis IX.
In its constructional plan the cathedral is a cross with three naves.
The length of the central nave is 130,2m, weight 16,4m, height 37m.
It has three facades, each of them have, in its turn, - three portals.
There's no analogous decision in any gothic cathedral.
The labirynth (261,5m), which the faithful crawled on their knees, was constructed in one of the naves.
On the outside the temple attracts the attention by the two completely different towers.
The nothern tower is crowned with the spire (spill) in the form of pyramid (the 40s of the XII century) with the height of 105m (architect Jan Teksie).
The Spire (Spill) of the southern tower was erected in the Gothic style at the beginning of XVI century.
The height of the Tower is 113m.
It is the highest belfry, built in the Romanesque style.
The temple has a large number (176 pieces) of coloured stained glass (the area of which is about 2500 square metres).
They are not very bright on the outside, but on the inside they are iridescent under the solar rays.
Internal as well as external decoration of the cathedral is rich in its sculptural constructions (over 10 000 pieces).
_
The precious relic "The Protecting Veil [Intercession] of the Mother of God" (presented by Charles II, the Bald) is kept in the cathedral since 876.
There is a legend that exactly this Veil was on the Mother of God when she gave birth to (the) Jesus Christ.
