St. Peter's Cathedral (Basilica).

Christian cathedral (height 189m, the area is 22 067 square m) is erected in Vatikan in the place of the apostle Peter's Basilica.

The beginning of construction works counting since 1506 (architect Donato Bramante), when the first stone was laid.

This cause was continued by Rafael (1483-1520), and then by Michelangelo (1547).

In the first construction plans the cathedral had had the form of Greece cross, which later was somewhat changed.

Its dome (in diameter 42m) has 16 windows.

The dome is an important part in the outline of Rome because it can be seen everywhere.

Thanks to the crafty calculation of the architects many effects were riched which make an impression that stairs and colonnads rise to the heavens.

The main altar is flood with light.

Interiors of the cathedral were decorated in Baroque with a lavish gilded moldings, mosaics, paintings, reliefs of colored marble, bronze and wood.

There is an ancient roman tomb under the altar, where behind a marble lattice the relics of St. Pere's and other Saint (St. John Chrysostom, Gregory the Theologian) and tombs of the Pope are placed.

The construction of the building continued 150-170 years.

It was conscecrated in 1626 by Pope Urban VIII.
