Hagia Sopia was built by the Emperor Justinian in the 6th century.

When the construction works had been completed, it became the greatest church in the world.

What a wonderful edifice!

When Justinian was here in 537, he, probably, stood right there, under the vaults of this great dome, saying: "Oh, Solomon, I've oudone you".

It was a presuming statement, taking into account the fact that he meant the temple of Solomon, which served as the prototype to many churches in the world.

But I for one think Justinian had the right to say so.

The mosque "Hagia Sophia" is still one of the greatest sacred place in the world.

The name "Hagia Sophia" means "the God's wisdom".

And the God's wisdom is shown in this elegant engeneering decision; the entire constrcution shows us elemental forces of nature, the power of divine creativity.

And, in particular, it can be seen in how this tremendous dome, rising up to the skies, as though it floats under the entire edifice.

That's how it works: a dome supported by semi-dome, which rely on massive columns, almost hidden in the structure of the building.

That's why the outer curve of the dome is perfectly repeated by curves of semi-domes and a quarter of domes.

I am now in the balcony right under the dome, and there is a room below me where emperors were crowned.

Standing here at the top takes my breath away.

Looking at these rails, it is hard to image how they endure my weight.

It becamea prototype, because it was the first time church got such a huge dome, symbolizing heavens.

But since then each large church, each cathedral must have had domes: Duomo in Florence, the Cathedral of St. Peter's in Rome, St. Paul's in London.

With the rise of the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century Hagia Sophia became a place that has a sacred significance for Christians, and Muslims.
