Готовый перевод Мы строим деревню / we are building ecovillage: телефон
Our phone began to ring
Initially we didn't have telephony at all. We had to go to the top of the nearest mountain and call from there. So that's how a more conscious approach to chatting has developed. It occurs to your mind: "Shall I give a call to X?" You grab your cellphone then look at the mountain and thinks: "Actually, I don't have much to say right now". And your desire to chat vanishes. Naturally that helped saving a lot of money. If for each phone call people had to go to the top of a high mountain we'd be a very sporty nation. Or mobile providers would be very poor. Of course the lack of communication facilities was the source of certain inconveniences: if you needed to order something (building materials, for instance) you had to go to the village. And more: the workers couldn't be in the the settlement for a long time. Their relatives worried because they couldn't connect with them and so on.
For abut a year we tried to solve the telephone question. Some variants were offered but they were too expensive. But then we found a suitable solution. An antenna was installed on a telecommunications workers` booth in the nearest village and then it was directed towards our location. It worked out. Radio extender was 10 times cheaper than up-link. Now we have intercommunication. But we don't have Internet access. But we can have a chat. When telephony appeared, everyone started chatting. Isn't it joyful to tell everybody that now we have a phone? Then we got first telephone bills. And we immediately reduced the number of calls.
Now, during the winter, we sometimes switch it off when we don't feel like talking to anyone. And sometimes we talk a lot. Having a phone is convenient, after all. It creates an illusion that everything is close. Civilization
