[26][42]What does this mean to you?
[42][62]I keep seeing it in my dreams,John. It means something.
[73][95]Weirdo. kook. nut.
[95][115]I've been reading the dictionary.
[115][148]I don't sleep.
[148][176]Whatever happened with the explosion flipped a switch.
[176][191]You don't know what you're about to do.
[191][203]I love you, john, and you love me.
[203][222]Your name is? it's riley.
[222][234]What's the matter?
[234][253]Never brought a girl home before? no.
[253][265]Riley climbed out john's window.
[265][280]Now is not the time for this.
[280][302]Well,when is the time?
[302][326]You bring danger into riley's life.
[326][340]And I'm gonna keep seeing riley even if everyone thinks
[340][360]It's a bad idea.
[360][380]I understand that it's a bad idea.
[380][407]So don't worry about it and be happy you're a machine.
[407][441]I'm a machine. I can't be happy.
[1079][1098]Anything yet?
[1098][1130]I've dumped about 50,000 websites.
[1130][1159]There are hundreds of companies with three dots in the logo.
[1159][1192]Organic fruit. candles.
[1192][1227]Dog collars. baby wipes.
[1227][1253]Ice cream.
[1253][1286]Nothing screams skynet like baby wipes and ice cream.
[1286][1302]Keep looking.
[1302][1328]It is something you saw in a dream.
[1348][1365]And written in blood on the wall.
[1365][1388]So it means something. will you just keep looking?
[1388][1418]Tomorrow. I'm beat.
[1431][1456]You never sleep. make yourself useful.
[1469][1494]Most efficient killing machine ever invented.
[1494][1509]You got her doing laundry.
[1663][1680]You do never sleep.
[1962][1984]One glazed. one rainbow sprinkle.
[1984][2017]One cinnamon twist.
[2017][2035]You never forget,do you?
[2035][2062]No,I don't.
[2133][2146]So how was mexico?
[2146][2175]Did you get to see your buddy down there?
[2214][2232]Where's the rest of it?
[2232][2254]He was gone when we got there.
[2254][2273]After you went all that way?
[2273][2286]Bummer.
[2286][2309]Yes.
[2309][2323]It was a bummer.
[2342][2364]Is your brother still seeing that crazy blonde?
[2364][2395]Yes. it's become a problem.
[2395][2413]She snuck out the window one night
[2413][2426]And left the alarm off.
[2428][2440]We got robbed.
[2440][2465]No way.
[2465][2480]Did you catch who did it?
[2531][2563]Everything worked out fine.
[2577][2612]That's a pretty zen attitude.
[2612][2652]«the robbed that smiles steals something from the thief.»
[2652][2676]You read othello.
[2676][2692]You asked me to.
[2692][2712]Did you like it?
[2729][2746]It was more violent than I expected.
[2746][2770]I should've warned you.
[2770][2814]No. everything worked out fine.
[2892][2911]You're not eating your donuts.
[2911][2928]Later.
[2956][2988]Do you have a history of california field artillery?
[2988][3020]I'm interested in the ancient muzzle-loading rifles
[3020][3042]Used during the modoc indian war.
[3062][3097]Uh,in the california room.
[3149][3166]I've a big week.
[3166][3186]Paper due on thursday.
[3186][3209]Peter the great's war with the turks
[3209][3235]And the technological modernization of imperial russia.
[3235][3257]It's better than it sounds.
[3434][3448]What are you lookin' at?
[3495][3506]Him.
[3516][3539]****
[3549][3562]I know him.
[3562][3602]Not unless you're about,oh,110 years old.
[3602][3629]That photo's from 1920.
[3629][3652]See,december 31,1920.
[3673][3698]What was he doing in 1920?
[3698][3722]What is this picture from?
[3722][3740]Famous new year's eve speakeasy fire
[3740][3760]During prohibition.
[3760][3785]43 people died.
[3785][3799]There were rumors
[3799][3821]Someone threw a molotov cocktail through the door.
[3821][3858]Lots of rivalries between the different speakeasy clubs.
[3911][3926]Over here. over here.
[4287][4315]I need to know what happened to him.
[4528][4540]Hello.
[4550][4578]John,can you come get me?
[4578][4591]Where? what's wrong?
[4591][4617]At 341 grove way in van nuys.
[4617][4635]Can you please just come?
[4720][4742]Most periodicals from the '20s
[4742][4761]Haven't been transferred to digital,
[4761][4787]So this could take awhile.
[4787][4801]But fire that big,
[4801][4819]There's always survivor stories.
[4819][4832]Like with the titanic.
[4832][4856]You know, there's only one titanic survivor left,
[4856][4869]Millvina dean.
[4869][4889]Course,she was only two months old when it happened
[4889][4915]So her story isn't particularly instructive.
[4937][4953]You're a very happy person.
[4953][4966]I am?
[4966][4995]I don't know that many happy people.
[4995][5038]Well,I guess that's my own little survivor story.
[5038][5050]Of course,having bone cancer
[5050][5074]Was like being the titanic and the iceberg.
[5098][5124]So,uh,why do you want to find out about this guy?
[5124][5150]I'm interested in the past.
[5150][5170]It effects everything in the future.
[5170][5206]Those who don't know history are destined to repeat it.
[5206][5226]Or die.
[5267][5279]What's wrong?
[5279][5290]Little cold in here.
[5290][5316]It's 76 degrees.
[5365][5390]Check this one.
[5390][5407]D6.
[5465][5475]That's him.
[5475][5494]That's the guy from the fire.
[5494][5505]Who's that other man?
[5505][5522]Rudolph valentino.
[5536][5567]The greatest silent film star of all time?
[5579][5599]Ugh,you kids today
[5599][5612]With your rock and roll
[5612][5639]And your obsession with medieval siege weapons.
[5639][5666]Rudolph valentino
[5666][5700]And myron stark at the premiere of the sheik.
[5700][5724]What was stark doing there?
[5724][5754]Living it up on the red carpet.
[5790][5815]I enjoyed your film very much,mr. valentino.
[5815][5825]Thank you.
[5825][5838]Although I thought your decision
[5838][5853]To return the gun to lady diana
[5853][5870]To protect herself from the caravan of thieves
[5870][5892]Was misguided
[5892][5923]Given that she was a security risk.
[5949][5979]Stark is shaking hands with valentino.
[5979][5998]But look at his eye line.
[5998][6014]He's looking at that man.
[6014][6044]«rupert chandler.»
[6044][6070]Check out that hat.
[6070][6087]We could search the city and county records
[6087][6100]For more on stark.
[6100][6112]Where are they?
[6112][6129]Basement. vital records.
[6129][6150]But it's locked and I don't have the keys.
[6150][6165]You'll have to come back in the morning
[6165][6178]And talk with barry.
[6178][6198]'scuse me. where are you going?
[6309][6332]Hey,excuse me.
[6347][6358]Looking for someone?
[6358][6379]Uh,yeah,riley. blonde girl.
[6379][6407]Uh,I barely know mike's friends.
[6407][6422]Uh,gail silver. mike's mom.
[6422][6450]Oh,hi. I'm john. let me help you with these.
[6504][6535]Oh. this is the wrong kind.
[6535][6552]You said «beer.»
[6552][6563]How come you never introduced me
[6563][6577]To your friend john?
[6577][6597]'cause he's not my friend.
[6597][6619]Some loner weirdo
[6619][6632]Who dropped out of school.
[6632][6643]What are you doing here?
[6643][6660]Just looking for somebody.
[6670][6687]And being helpful.
[6687][6708]You could learn a lesson from him.
[6708][6728]What,like sucking up to mom?
[6728][6748]Is the tv in your room broken?
[6748][6766]It's kinda hard to relax when you're out here.
[6766][6780]I gotcha. I'm goin'.
[6819][6836]I didn't know you could just send your mom off
[6836][6846]To her room like that.
[6846][6862]Yeah. so?
[6862][6875]Who you lookin' for?
[6875][6897]Girl named riley.
[6908][6923]Oh,I know riley.
[6923][6939]Oh,got your beer!
[6939][6954]Thanks.
[6954][6971]Okay,thanks.
[7004][7020]What are you doing?
[7020][7032]You called me all upset.
[7032][7045]What--what's goin' on?
[7045][7061]Oh,that--that was just--
[7061][7084]This guy was bothering me,that's all.
[7084][7111]Well,I have a car. let's go.
[7111][7124]No. it's-- it's cool now.
[7124][7143]-Come on. we can hang out a little bit. -hang out?
[7143][7163]I only came to get you.
[7202][7216]I'm sorry.
[7216][7247]It's cool. we can--we can--we can stay.
[7335][7352]Are you trying to get me fired?
[7352][7373]-No. -then what are you doin' down here?
[7373][7400]Looking for records on myron stark.
[7400][7415]I don't think he was who everyone thinks he was.
[7415][7425]I let you in
[7425][7452]After hours whenever you want.
[7452][7475]And for you to go and do this,
[7475][7502]Exactly what I tell you not to,
[7502][7515]Really not cool.
[7515][7534]I need the information.
[7534][7552]And I need this job. you broke the lock.
[7552][7563]I'll fix it.
[7563][7583]Just put it back. put it all back.
[7632][7646]Don't.
[8215][8233]I'm sorry.
[8233][8262]I shouldn't have gone down there.
[8262][8291]Forget it. it's no big deal.
[8291][8312]Yes,it is.
[8322][8341]We're friends.
[8341][8360]I don't really have many friends.
[8360][8388]Actually,I don't have any friends.
[8388][8415]You? that--that can't be true.
[8449][8480]So did you find anything out down there?
[8498][8549]No. there's no record of myron stark before the fire.
[8549][8564]Dead end.
[8564][8578]I don't like dead ends.
[8578][8597]He could've been an immigrant.
[8597][8626]Came through ellis island, shortened his name.
[8626][8647]Worked his way up from nothing.
[8647][8667]It's the immigrant spirit.
[8667][8682]Single-minded pursuit of a goal.
[8682][8698]Never giving up.
[8698][8719]Buying into the american dream.
[8719][8746]An effective strategy.
[8746][8772]Either that or he robbed banks.
[8887][8900]What?
[8900][8932]Can you show me police records?
[8932][8947]Shortly after 2:00 pm,
[8947][8966]A lone robber held up the la brea savings and loan.
[8966][8979]Witnesses say the masked man
[8979][8993]Armed with a thompson submachine gun
[8993][9018]And a daring disregard for human life opened fire.
[9018][9033]Eight citizens were felled
[9033][9052]And did not live to tell about it.
[9052][9081]This is the third bank robbed in this fashion in recent weeks.
[9081][9101]Detective,can you tell us how much was looted
[9101][9117]From the vault?
[9117][9142]Over $70,000 in cash,silver,and liberty bonds.
[9142][9163]Was the robber injured in the fray?
[9163][9185]Police let fly with a hail of bullets.
[9185][9201]The robber was hit with nearly 30 rounds,
[9201][9215]But escaped on foot.
[9215][9237]How in god's name did he survive?
[9237][9252]that has not been ascertained.
[9252][9269]A manhunt is underway.
[9302][9322]You really think he robbed banks?
[9322][9352]It's a very effective strategy.
[9412][9429]But why? what did he need it for?
[9429][9452]To buy into the american dream.
[9477][9512]Stark bought parcels of land in the san fernando valley,
[9512][9534]Burbank,sunland,van nuys
[9534][9560]Two days after the last heist.
[9560][9578]What'd he do with all that land?
[9578][9589]He built houses.
[9589][9600]I found this application
[9600][9623]For a business license.
[9623][9638]Construction.
[9669][9689]This is worldwide news.
[9689][9708]Myron stark versus rupert chandler.
[9708][9731]A classic david versus goliath.
[9731][9756]Real estate magnate and builder rupert chandler
[9756][9778]Was the undisputed king
[9778][9790]Of the expanding san fernando valley.
[9790][9819]But along came a young upstart,myron stark.
[9819][9834]What started as a one-man operation
[9834][9850]Soon grew into a thriving business
[9850][9861]That went head to head
[9861][9881]With the largest builder in the county.
[9881][9895]It's said stark spoke six languages,
[9895][9915]Paid double the wages of his competitors,
[9915][9933]And treated all of his workers equally
[9933][9968]Regardless of their employment history or citizen status.
[9968][9995]Stark himself could always be found shoulder to shoulder
[9995][10005]With his workers,
[10005][10032]A pickaxe in his strong hands.
[10032][10048]Soon stark & company became a thorn
[10048][10060]In the side of his rival.
[10060][10073]His meteoric rise
[10073][10090]Threatened to topple the «king chandler»
[10090][10108]From his throne.
[10108][10121]Chandler's top foreman,fred jeffers,
[10121][10139]Was recently asked about the rivalry.
[10139][10164]To hear jeffers tell it,«we're not worried.
[10164][10187]»fly-by-nights like stark come and go.
[10187][10206]«chandler's an established company with contracts
[10206][10226]»booked through 1925.
[10226][10246]We'll crush him like a bug.«
[10246][10267]Upon hearing jeffers' fighting words,
[10267][10300]Stark reported to reply simply,»we'll see.«
[10329][10347]Here's more on chandler and jeffers.
[10347][10365]And something really strange.
[10365][10386]Fred jeffers,rupert chandler's man,
[10386][10406]Went missing back in 1925.
[10406][10426]Was never found.
[10486][10496]What is this?
[10496][10524]A 17-round glock 9mm semiautomatic.
[10524][10541]Why do you have it?
[10541][10552]In case I need it.
[10552][10569]Have you ever used it?
[10569][10587]Yes.
[10587][10601]Are you in trouble?
[10601][10614]No.
[10614][10627]Are you afraid of someone?
[10627][10651]Afraid? no.
[10687][10719]I've seen cuts on your face.
[10719][10732]There was one last week.
[10732][10746]You were wearing makeup,but...
[10746][10780]Sometimes I get into fights.
[10780][10805]Wh--why?
[10805][10820]My brother.
[10820][10835]There are people out to hurt him.
[10835][10846]I protect him.
[10846][10863]Who protects you?
[10863][10879]I do.
[10920][10944]Why are we doing this?
[10944][10971]Why is myron stark so important?
[10971][11007]He was doing something, and it doesn't make sense to me.
[11007][11028]I need to find out what it was.
[11028][11051]None of this makes sense to me.
[11051][11087]Not you,not the gun,not the guy in the photograph.
[11108][11123]I know.
[11149][11169]I've never fired a gun before.
[11169][11190]Do you want to?
[11190][11220]Sure,but...
[11220][11237]Wait.
[11237][11271]N--no. we can't do this here.
[11271][11282]Grip it with both hands.
[11301][11318]Squeeze the trigger slowly.
[11340][11356]Slowly.
[11639][11650]Oh,yeah.
[11650][11662]Oh,my god. I'm terrible at this.
[11677][11690]John.
[11690][11709]No,I don't know how.
[11724][11740]What,you live in a cave?
[11740][11754]Come on.
[11773][11797]What am I supposed to do?
[11797][11812]I have no idea.
[11812][11834]I just pushed those buttons at random.
[11834][11845]And you sucked.
[11857][11876]Hey,check you out,mr. normal.
[11876][11904]Kill him,alex.
[11943][11958]Come on,johnny. I'm rooting for you.
[11992][12013]****
[12051][12066]Dude,you suck.
[12108][12123]Hey,come on. kill him,alex.
[12305][12319]I'm gonna go. you stay here if you want.
[12319][12329]No,john,wait.
[12329][12344]This was a mistake.
[12344][12359]Well,i-- I'm coming with you.
[12359][12389]Whoa whoa. you're going? with that weirdo?
[12389][12403]Yeah. I'm sorry. we have to go.
[12417][12437]Oh,no,no,no. wait.
[12437][12450]Give me my lighter back.
[12450][12468]Your what?
[12468][12486]You took my lighter.
[12486][12501]No. c--no. come on,john. let's go.
[12501][12512]No,no,no. give it to me.
[12512][12529]Give it to me. get off me.
[12529][12541]Hey,hey,you leave her alone.
[12541][12557]Hey,no one's talking to you,weirdo.
[12557][12575]Don't. don't. stop. come on.
[12586][12598]Watch out,man.
[12598][12615]Give it to me,you screwy bitch.
[12680][12697]John. john.
[12697][12711]Take the damn lighter.
[12711][12725]Come on,john. let's get out of here.
[12790][12812]I'm out here on mulholland drive
[12812][12830]Where a hiker has discovered
[12830][12878]What appears to be the body of a man who died over 60 years ago.
[12878][12911]Tom jacobs was out for an early morning walk
[12911][12937]When he spotted a piece of metal in the ravine.
[12937][12954]Tom?
[12954][12973]I saw what looked like the bumper of a car.
[12973][12988]But when I got closer,
[12988][13010]I could see that it was one of those old-timey ones,
[13010][13031]You know,like--like you see in the movies.
[13031][13058]And then I saw the bones.
[13058][13084]Personal effects found in the vehicle
[13084][13118]Reveal the remains to be those of fred jeffers,
[13118][13134]A man who disappeared in the 1920s.
[13285][13298]Wait! what are you doing?
[13298][13309]What are you--
[13309][13325]What do you want?
[13325][13340]No!
[13340][13363]Please stop! no!
[13435][13450]»jeffers' disappearance
[13450][13462]«was a terrible blow for chandler,
[13462][13475]»who endured a string of tragedies
[13475][13501]«starting with the death of his beloved son will,
[13501][13530]Who died on new year's eve,1920.»
[13546][13567]New year's eve,1920.
[13617][13629]Let's get 'em out of here.
[13648][13663]That's rupert chandler's boy.
[13663][13681]Let's cover him up. let's get him out of here.
[13681][13696]Come on.
[13790][13813]Will chandler died in the speakeasy fire.
[13813][13832]And myron stark was there.
[13832][13860]So there must be a connection.
[14058][14081]I thought you were gonna kill that guy.
[14101][14119]Why'd you call me?
[14119][14140]Because.
[14140][14156]I wanted you to come.
[14182][14197]Weird way of showing it.
[14197][14224]Oh,the flirting with mike thing?
[14224][14245]I'm a teenage girl,john.
[14245][14263]We do that kind of crap to guys we like.
[14263][14294]The loner weirdo?
[14294][14313]I don't get it.
[14313][14337]Never gotten it.
[14337][14363]My old foster parents
[14363][14389]Are these '60s hippies.
[14389][14421]Always talking like they were single-handedly saving the world
[14421][14442]Because they recycled.
[14442][14466]They called me the deviant.
[14466][14521]Like,«the deviant got a »c« in math.»
[14521][14552]«should we take the deviant to see bruce hornsby?»
[14566][14591]That's why I came up to you that day, john.
[14613][14649]Because I thought since you're a weirdo,
[14649][14667]You might get me.
[14689][14727]My foster parents used to call me the delinquent.
[14770][14784]So you did take the lighter.
[14784][14810]I like shiny things.
[14837][14849]Bad habit.
[14878][14893]What happened to your real parents?
[14893][14922]They died when I was little.
[14937][14950]In a fire.
[14978][15000]Why were you in a foster home?
[15000][15017]You have your mom.
[15017][15053]She was in a mental hospital.
[15053][15076]That explains things.
[15132][15152]She was engaged once.
[15169][15185]He was a pretty cool guy.
[15185][15207]Didn't work out,
[15207][15255]But he was kind of the only friend we had.
[15255][15294]Little while ago,he,uh,helped us with something.
[15325][15356]There was an accident and his new wife died.
[15387][15401]And he left.
[15459][15478]That's what happens.
[15512][15533]I shouldn't be around people.
[15533][15569]Is that why you went nuclear on mike?
[15603][15631]No,that's...
[15631][15645]That's other stuff.
[15645][15664]Do you want to talk about it?
[15690][15708]Sometimes,yes.
[15729][15753]Mostly no.
[15753][15778]But sometimes yes.
[16005][16025]I found will chandler's obituary.
[16025][16049]I'm kind of peeing right now. can't it wait?
[16049][16068]400 people came to his funeral.
[16068][16082]He had a lot of friends.
[16082][16109]His father had a lot of money. there's a difference.
[16109][16130]I think stark killed him.
[16130][16147]We don't even know if they knew each other.
[16147][16168]And if stark wanted to kill chandler,
[16168][16191]Why take out 43 innocent people?
[16191][16216]It happens.
[16252][16270]Do you ever think about dying?
[16270][16285]About what?
[16285][16314]Or about suicide?
[16314][16345]Why would I think about that?
[16345][16372]Because there's something wrong with you.
[16372][16405]Gee,don't ever look for work as a counselor.
[16430][16452]I've never thought about killing myself.
[16452][16466]Not for a minute.
[16466][16484]It would destroy my mom,for one.
[16484][16514]I couldn't do that to my family,
[16514][16537]To the people who love me.
[16537][16556]Could you?
[16556][16567]Anyways,
[16567][16585]I'm not sick anymore.
[16585][16614]I mean,I have to get a scan every six months.
[16614][16656]But so far I'm clean.
[16682][16716]Earlier when I cross-referenced the names of survivors
[16716][16737]From the fire,this woman's name
[16737][16771]Came up in a documentary about the roaring '20s.
[16771][16787]It might tell us more about what happened
[16787][16800]Inside the speakeasy.
[16800][16813]Film vault's on the top floor.
[16813][16824]You'll have to go alone.
[16824][16836]Why?
[16836][16850]No wheelchair access.
[16910][16927]You're really strong.
[16927][16946]I work out.
[17035][17062]Wow. look at all this.
[17062][17099]Dvds are all right, but this is the real deal.
[17099][17125]Silver nitrate. raw.
[17125][17146]Before film makers figured out all the tricks.
[17146][17178]Pure humanity on film.
[17178][17195]None of that computer generated,
[17195][17213]Digital crap they do today.
[17213][17265]All these people captured, frozen in time.
[17265][17278]They never age.
[17278][17302]I mean,100 years could pass.
[17302][17338]They'll still be here. still look exactly the same.
[17338][17378]It would be nice,wouldn't it?
[17378][17406]Freeze yourself in a moment.
[17406][17424]The best moment of your life.
[17424][17456]Have things never change.
[17456][17500]Be beautiful Healthy strong.
[17536][17557]Anyway...
[17557][17578]Don't let me get all a.e. housman on you.
[17578][17608]Uh,the documentaries
[17608][17623]Are up there.
[17673][17722]We would go out to the gin joints every weekend.
[17722][17754]We'd drink,and smoke,
[17754][17785]And dance the black bottom, the charleston,
[17785][17802]The shimmy.
[17802][17858]Oh,I was a real bearcat back then.
[17858][17877]And I was crazy in love
[17877][17900]With this prizefighter.
[17900][17939]We were together there,
[17939][17974]The night when the fire started.
[17974][18006]He was helping everybody out.
[18022][18061]And I just remember...
[18061][18091]Sitting on the curb...
[18091][18102]Crying.
[18102][18124]People said that,uh,
[18124][18147]Someone threw a bomb in the door.
[18147][18180]Now,to tell you the truth,
[18180][18227]I was pretty zozzled. That's what we called it then.
[18227][18252]But I didn't see a bomb.
[18252][18287]Uh,what I did see was this,um,
[18287][18310]This flash of blue light
[18310][18330]And sparks,
[18330][18359]Then the craziest thing.
[18359][18383]This man in the middle of the room,
[18383][18404]Naked as a jaybird.
[18427][18439]I don't know.
[18439][18476]Maybe I just imagined the whole thing.
[18476][18511]Who knows?
[18511][18536]Probably the liquor talking.
[18536][18564]The fire,it was an accident.
[18564][18588]Yeah,sounds like there was some electrical problem.
[18588][18610]He didn't mean to kill all those people.
[18610][18629]No. of course not.
[18629][18648]It's just like in the wizard of oz
[18648][18672]When the house falls on the witch.
[18913][18943]Give me your clothes.
[19155][19180]Hey,where are you going?
[19180][19204]I know what he was looking at.
[19204][19229]He was measuring the stars' radial velocity,
[19229][19260]The distance in parsecs, and the cartesian coordinates.
[19260][19281]What? why?
[19281][19303]To pinpoint the date.
[19303][19323]You can tell the date by looking at the sky?
[19345][19365]****
[19413][19420]*****
[19427][19446]Stellar motion can be used to calculate
[19446][19465]What the sky will look like for hundreds of years
[19465][19488]In the future or the past.
[19504][19523]Why is the date so important?
[19523][19560]It's not. unless it's the wrong date.
[19589][19608]****
[19627][19644]Myron Stark was in the wrong place
[19644][19661]At the wrong time.
[19744][19778]«if we cry because the sun has gone out of our lives,
[19778][19791]»our tears can prevent us
[19791][19814]From seeing the stars.«
[19814][19843]Chandler's eulogy for his son?
[19843][19868]»today is a day for mourning.
[19868][19892]«but it is also a day to remember my son.
[19892][19917]»a gifted young man with a grand heart.
[19917][19933]«a budding architect,
[19933][19952]»his dream was to build pico tower
[19952][19973]«on the corner of 3rd and pico.
[19973][19986]»that was his land,
[19986][20008]«the soil where his dreams were to take root.
[20008][20032]»it will remain his land forever,
[20032][20049]«never to be sold or developed.
[20049][20075]»instead,his legacy will live on
[20075][20090]«in a memorial garden
[20090][20114]I will plant there in his honor.»
[20114][20133]That can't be right.
[20133][20156]There is a pico tower in downtown la.
[20156][20176]It's an architectural landmark.
[20176][20211]We took a field trip there in third grade.
[20211][20225]Someone must've built it.
[20266][20278]Tax records.
[20278][20306]They show Chandler's rivalry with Stark
[20306][20319]Cost him everything.
[20319][20346]His business went under in july 1925.
[20346][20360]His assets were auctioned off
[20360][20375]To pay off his debt,
[20375][20397]Including the property at 3rd and pico.
[20397][20421]Bankruptcy. tragic accidents.
[20421][20450]The death of a beloved son.
[20450][20471]It's like the family's cursed.
[20506][20525]Mr. chandler,I'm myron stark.
[20525][20543]Do I know you?
[20543][20558]No,you don't know me.
[20558][20585]Mr. chandler's in a hurry.
[20585][20622]I'm interested in purchasing a piece of property.
[20639][20649]3rd and pico.
[20649][20684]That land's not for sale.
[20684][20699]I'll pay twice what it's worth.
[20699][20709]Are you deaf?
[20709][20732]Are you deaf? He said it's not for sale.
[20855][20892]Does it say who bought it? the pico property?
[20923][20945]M.s. stark?
[20945][20968]So he not only bought the land,
[20968][20979]But he designed it himself?
[20979][20989]The building.
[20989][21013]It's about the building. what is?
[21013][21028]Stark accidentally killed the man
[21028][21056]Who was going to build it,so he had to build it himself.
[21056][21075]Everything he did was to drive chandler under
[21075][21089]And get him to sell that land.
[21089][21109]Okay.
[21109][21144]There must be a reason why stark needed to build it.
[21183][21211]You wanna know the really weird thing?
[21211][21233]Stark disappeared two weeks before the building opened
[21233][21243]In may of 1927.
[21243][21260]Disappeared?
[21260][21285]Fell off the face of the earth. never seen again.
[21285][21313]What's happened at pico tower since it was built?
[21313][21329]Anything important?
[21329][21344]Anything on new year's eve?
[21344][21359]New year's eve when?
[21359][21372]Any new year's eve.
[21372][21386]Not that I can see.
[21386][21403]In fact,it's closed now.
[21403][21428]They had to retrofit after the last earthquake.
[21428][21444]I'm not sure when they're reopening.
[21671][21684]*******
[21688][21758]***
[23517][23535]Hey. I thought you left.
[23535][23551]What are you doing back here?
[23551][23573]Are you all right? what happened?
[23573][23596]I'm fine.
[23596][23609]Your brother again?
[23609][23619]I'm fine.
[23636][23664]You never touched your donuts.
[23664][23677]I wasn't hungry.
[23677][23695]Your muscles are weak.
[23695][23711]It was difficult for you to pull the trigger
[23711][23722]Of the glock.
[23722][23739]And you've lost 8% of your body weight
[23739][23755]In the past two weeks.
[23755][23775]When I carried you to the film vault,
[23775][23786]I weighed you.
[23786][23807]Wait,what?
[23807][23826]This whole night,the entire time,
[23826][23848]You've been examining me?
[23848][23872]What--what the hell is going on here?
[23872][23899]Your cancer is back.
[23899][23930]You have a secondary tumor in the long bone of your arm
[23930][23950]And possibly your lungs.
[23950][23969]Are you joking?
[23969][23986]No.
[23986][24010]Then you're crazy,you don't know what you're talking about.
[24010][24036]Ewing's sarcoma. first identified in the 1920s--
[24036][24068]I know what it is,okay? I'm the one in here!
[24095][24123]No wonder you don't have any friends.
[24123][24146]You can't just do things like that.
[24146][24178]You can't just show up whenever you need somethin'.
[24178][24201]You can't carry a gun around and freak people out,
[24201][24228]And walk into the bathroom when a guy's taking a leak
[24228][24245]And ask him if he's gonna kill himself.
[24245][24280]And you can't just blurt things out
[24280][24303]Like «you have cancer,»
[24303][24326]Especially to someone who's already had it.
[24339][24364]You have no clue,do you?
[24364][24385]You have no idea what it's like
[24385][24415]To have something inside of you,
[24415][24435]Something that's damaged.
[24435][24470]It's like a bomb...
[24470][24484]Waiting to go off.
[24545][24565]I need to finish my paper.
[24565][24577]You should make an appointment
[24577][24590]With your oncologist.
[24590][24603]The tumor's still small.
[24603][24613]Get out.
[24997][25017]Where were you all night?
[25017][25031]Out.
[25056][25078]Carbon chain c24.
[25078][25105]Lanolin and red dye #27.
[25105][25129]You were with riley.
[25417][25427]We're closed.
[25427][25453]Is eric here?
[25453][25473]Eric?
[25473][25501]He works the night shift. he lets me in.
[25501][25513]I have no idea.
[25513][25528]They just called and asked me to come in.
[25528][25541]Sorry.
[25553][25570]Do you like donuts?
[25570][25591]I have one glazed, one rainbow sprinkle,
[25591][25604]One cinnamon twist.
