When Lay Land woke up, she could swear that for a moment of wake she felt the coolness of the metal gate that she had just touched in her sleep.
They were beautiful, and Lay Land hated them so much.
She wanted to get to the palace, but the gate was closed.
What's the difference, really, she thought.
After all, she urged herself, I dream of her palace! Such a haunting dream may be connected to some kind of magic.
"That's right," the unicorn answered eagerly. "The queue's end is over there."
The unicorn mare laughed.
"Millicent!" someone shouted hysterically from the other side of the lawn. Lay instinctively turned around and saw an elderly pegasus mare standing at a stall with cold lemonade. "Millicent, strawberry one is over! I'll take you an orange-flavoured, you old stick!"
"Me, old? I'll prance on your grave, Tywie Shell...! And tell them to put more ice!"
Maybe it's even her palace, Lay Land mused as she walked through an echoing gloomy hall decorated with blue marble.
Suddenly, she shivered and turned around.
"Well," Lay Land grumbled. "At least, I'm in."
Who knows who you can meet here, Lay thought, feeling a bit frightened. She could not even buck in a proper way, and her magic had never been strong.
"Sweet Goddesses!" the pony cried out in relief as she looked at Lay Land. "Finally! But you picked the wrong time."
"Time for what?" Lay asked in amazement. "And you were waiting for me?"
"Of course, you're a new guard. I've already signed an order for you. But couldn't you wait a little longer? She's coming back right now."
"Don't you know?" The mare was surprised. "It's Celestia, the Brightest. She just came back from the edge of the earth and the sky where she had been raising the sun."
"But the Princess..." Lay was about to say, but the earth pony snorted, interrupting her.
"What princess? Celestia is the goddess of bright day, she's strict and fair. There are no princesses. Here, take it," she handed Lay Land a thrice-folded sheet of parchment with a huge, king-sized seal of dark blue wax, which looked much more impressive than the seals on royal decrees in Canterlot.
"What is it?"
"Your appointment. You're taken into the Guard."
"The Guard of the Prin... Celestia, the Goddess of Day?" Lay's blood run cold.
"No," the earth pony gave her a sympathetic look. "Luna, the Goddess of Night!"
If Princess Celestia is good in the waking world... but here she's so... then Princess Luna...
"Yeah, you have bad luck, friend," the earth pony patter her on the back. "Maybe you want to give it up?"
"No," she said firmly. "I came here to talk to her."
The palace and the mare were gone. She was standing in the middle of a desert.
"Yes! Yes, I do!"
Lay shook her head.
She woke up.
She sat on the bed and rubbed her forehead with her hoof. She was wide-awake.
Lay Land jumped off the bed, looking at this wonder with rapture in her eyes. Her hoof came upon a pencil lying on the floor.
A magic haze enveloped the pencil and lifted it into the air. It was not shaking anymore.
