In the early days of 1917, Alex Claremont-Diaz arrives at Craiglockhart War Hospital after serving
in France. Under the care of Dr. Shaan Srivastava, he armors himself in denial of his condition —
shell shock — and avoids treatment whenever possibly. He insists he’s fine. What soldier could
leave the Western Front behind without having nightmares?
Henry Fox, a short-lived soldier and sometimes poet, wanders through Craiglockhart for nearly a
year. Despite all efforts by him and Dr. Srivastava, his neurasthenic mutism diagnosis remains
firmly intact — traumatic events in France have left him unable to speak, among other symptoms.
Henry isolates himself, discouraged by limited communication and depressed by his progress,
determined to wait out the war alone.
The pair strike up a friendship that turns deeper, coming to rely on one another through their
therapies, upsets, and small victories. A story of connection, healing, family, and the definition of recovery.
