EN LA CAVERNA de Juan Carlos Carta /

→He failed hard. He didn't die of a shot. Just a wee scratch, but the notion of being dead made him faint. And so when he did regain consciousness the group of psychiatrists and social workers was waiting for him. They wanted to know why. An he told them about an old function of a movies, about a totally still characters. He also told them about a deep cave filled with images, about a cavity that should have been set on fire in order to made a light. He told them about a blinding light, the light of Truth, that came upon him. Then he said he also had a mission: clear and simple: "The truth is that everything is useless, that we are no better than a pests crawling around meaninglessly, that nothing is worthwhile. That we are mere ghosts, projected onto the wall with a different idiotic dialogs". "And finally", exclaimed the murderous child, - "the truth is that there is no cavern and moreover, there's no light where we can find the ultimate wisdom".
→That is how he came into his classroom on that day that would latter be marked by all the newspapers of his country. With the aura of enlightenment and destiny he entered the room, prepared to share his wisdom just as it was dictated by Plato's dogma. A always he marched to his desk, opened his backpack, pulled out a gun and started to fire at his mates pointblank. He shoot seven kids. And then, in a chaos of children he put the gun against his temple and pulled the trigger.
→And he translated Plato's text, thought it through and trough, with his interpretation of loneliness: If there was a Platonic cave in his life, it was one which he encountered crossing the path of doxa to see the light of the bright new day. The projectionist who abandons his images to ascend to the light of his truth. His truth: a dry desert of burning sands which should be crossed by him. The desert: a photogram burned by the incandescent lamp. He felt that he was a chosen to cross that road, the only being who, before all the others, was able to embrace the wisdom that was every so often lighted up with a bright light. And which indicated the liberation for him to carry out down there, deep into the cave. Sooner or later, it doesn't matter, he should free those eternally blinded. It was Plato who himself approved it. And it was no laughing matter.
→Except for one thing. Something that was connected to images and projections. There was something he could not stop thinking about. Not all the time of course but only when he was thinking of those childhood experiences. There was a connection, quite casual one, an almost secret tie between those images which he himself projected and something he had recently read during his philosophy classes, the famous story of the cave in Plato's Republic.
→Everything, absolutely everything, bored him enormously during his puberty.
→And speaking of fake: all this so-called life, his and those of others, seemed a big fat lie to him.
→He never even liked going to movies as one could presuppose after a childhood completely defined by its fondness for stories and projections. He just hated it. He was bored with all the crap that was being displayed in the dark room, not to mention the deep disgust he felt for those ghost-like creatures faking emotions and wandering from one place to another during two and a half hours.
→The time has passed and the boy had grown up. But his growing-up was quite different than the one of the normal young man. that is to say he grew reserved, much more quiet than the other boys and girls of his age. He didn't like a football, wasn't interested in going with his friends to the city center to get some drinks. Never on Saturday nights he visited the dances usually organized by his school to raise some funds.
→You could always know the show is about to end when the shoe-box was starting to smell of burning due to the lamp that it had inside.
→He charged five centavos for a movie and many of his neighborhood friends were excited to see a bizarre still films. And besides, he, by means of simply changing of the order of projected negatives, and with the help of a fiddle-faddle scripts he wrote during the siesta and which he himself was dubbing, was always able to offer to the audience different movies. Nor the same people, neither the same places couldn't prevent him from coming up with a different story every time.
→But still he was able to achieve a variety as he had numerous cuts of a film which his uncle, who worked as a projectionist, got him.
→When he was a child he invented a projector-box for movies, as to say, the photograms of movies, a simple thing, really: just a pictures, projected onto the cracked wall of his bedroom. The invention consisted of a shoe box with two holes on the sides. One of them introduced a fixture with its own source of 100 W, in the other a small ring let through the light beam and making the frame transparent. Complementing all this a magnifying glass that he himself has been moving toward or away from the box. The photographs, always the same ones, slid into a slot that he would cut on tops and on bottoms of the shoe boxes that his father bought every three months.
