Mont Saint-Michel
An architectural wonder of France.
Th legend says that one day the Archangel Michael appeared to St. Aubert, bishop of Avranches and instructed him to build a church in his honour.
The Archangel had to repeat his request.
Aubert repeatedly ignored the angel's instruction, until Michael burned a hole in the bishop's skull with his finger.
And only after it Auber began the construction.
And so the creation of of an outstanding masterpiece of Western culture began.
The construction took several centuries to built.
It is difficult to resist the fascination of this architectural wonder floatinhg over the sea.
Flaubert wrote: on the opposite side stands (rises) a great round rock.
Its base is enclosed by walls with loopholes.
Its top is crowened with the cathedral (church).
On the earth the approaches protect watchtowers, and its bell towers hover.
However, Stendhal said that having visited the monastery it didn't make on him any impression, unlike the gulf – the most beautiful in France.
The opinions may vary on this miracle of the Old World, it is undoubtedly magnetic because of the limited possibilities of this small rocky island.
The vertical thrust of the spires creates a charmed picture against the background of the silvery strip of the sea gulf (firth).
The construction of the chapel was completed about 708.
200 years later the Duke of Normandy and Richard I persecuted its inhabitants for depravity and atheism.
He settled here pious modest Benedictine monks who spent their lives in poverty, chastity and devotion.
From 11 up to 13 century all possible new constructions grew (expanded) here.
Old buildings were rebuilt.
Also instead of the old monastery there was erected a new one.
Medieval architects breathed a second life in their creations, having evenly divided the arches at length.
In height they divided buildings into floors
Each building should be a living organism, and not a dead (sluggish) one.
basing on topographic data, builders had to lay here a monastery
Consisting of three-storeyed sections, it deserves the name "le merveille (фр.)" - a miracle.
Very skillfully in granite rock the base and bearing supports were made, the harmony of columns, the vaults and the arches holding a three-storeyed building, and all this witnessed to the outstanding talent and profound (deep) knowledge of the construction science.
The creation of three storey buildings is symbolic for medieval hierarchy of society
On the first floor there is a shelter for poor pilgrims.
On the second is for rich, to the powerful (strong) of this world.
The top floor is provided for a monastic refectory as the clergy was considered to be the highest caste.
This hall, with its narrow, hiding behind the line of columns, windows through which the light of Atlantic goes (percolate), is full of mystery.
Here pious brethren taste (partake) the poor meal.
Soaring between the heaven and the earth the bypass gallery reigns over the eternal world, the place of learning of sacrament of existence.
The construction of the gallery was completed in the same year when in 1228 Saint Francis of Assisi was canonized
3 storeyed building turning to the sky! What is worthy admiring – the art of architects, the organization of providing with building materials or their delivery to the high-located building site?
On the square before the Romanesque church it is still possible to find hollowed out stones with the figures, letters and stamps of stone masons.
Like a knight’s castle, Mont Saint-Michel’s defensive fortification surrounding the church, the monastery and the village, was erected during the Hundred years war by the sworn enemy of England.
Indifferent to changeable history of the monastery, pink valerian and other plants grow in the cracks of stones, their flowers give to the walls a shade of bliss.
On paradise (heavenly) streets in the Middle Ages for the great number of pilgrims Mont-Saint-Michel was the point on the way to Santiago de Compostela
The sacred (holy) awe seized the pilgrims when there was a monastery before them on the horizon.
They climbed up on the rock to the temple hearing the songs of the prayers and full of enthusiastic belief, they contemplated behold sacred Mikhail's miracles.
Rigorous, but at the same time critically the monks noticed in the ancient cronicles: «These miracles made a lasting impression».
Pilgrims took away with themselves the relics and holy water or were content with the stones and the seashells which have become in a consequence a part of the arms of abbey as a sign of a point of pilgrimage.
Now instead of the devoted pilgrims hundreds of thousands idler (gapers), believers and tourists climb up the mountain and, as before they are sold on the threshold of a miracle Maun-Saint-Michel's and its patron doubtful symbols.
Early in the morning and in the evening when the stream of people breaks up, here it is possible to spend the finest hours, having remained alone.
In these hours time and space are vanished, the nature has a rest.
The vast skyline at a sunset, casting the fantastic extended shadow on a bay, forever remains in the memory.
Mont-Saint- Michel is the unique evidence (illustration) , of the violent creating forces and outstanding achievements of its creators.
