Bloodchild / Кровное дитя

Тексты / Поэзия

«Bloodchild» was purchased by Shawna McCarthy, and appeared in the June 1984 issue of IAsfm, with a striking abstract cover by Wayne Barlowe and dramatic interior illustrations by Nicholas Jainschigg. «Bloodchild» was Butler's second sale to IAsfm; her first IAsfm story, «Speech Sounds,» had already won her a Hugo Award the previous year, but «Bloodchild» was to prove even more popular, going on to win both the Hugo and the Nebula Award. «Bloodchild» was another controversial story. In my headnote for it in The Year's Best Science Fiction I wrote: «Here's as powerful a story as you're likely to see this (or any other) year,» and although IAsfm lost a few subscribers over it, it was more than worth it. Primarily known as' a prolific and popular novelist, Butler rarely writes short fiction, but when she does, it's worth the wait. As you are about to discover...
Octavia E. Butler sold her first novel in 1976 and has subsequently emerged as one of the foremost writers of her generation. Her critically acclaimed novels include Patternmaster, Mind of My Mind, Survivor,
Kindred and Wild Seed. Her most recent novel was Clay's Ark. She is currently at work on a new novel, tentatively entitled Exogenesis. Born in Pasadena, California, she now lives and works in Los Angeles.
